Today in the street of somewhere in Nigeria I bring to you the " Almajiri is also a Child".
ALMAJIRI IS ALSO A CHILD
Brief history of the "almajiri".
The word almajiri is derived from the Arabic word "Al-muhajirun" meaning "an emigrant". it usually refers to a person who migrats from his home to a popular teacher in the quest for knowledge. This is the basis of the almajiri system in what became Northern Nigeria.

Tracing back history to the period of colonialism in Nigeria, a system called "Tsangaya" prevailed in the Kanem-Borno Empire. It was established as an organised and comprehensive system of education for learning Islamic principles, values, jurisprudence and theology.
It was funded largely by the State. The community readily supported these almajiri in return, the almajiri gave to the society mostly through manual labour.
In those days, the pupils lived with their parents/guardians for moral upbringing, and all the schools were located within the immediate environment from where the pupils came from.
The system also produced the judges, clerks, and teachers who provided the colonial administration with the needed staff. The first set of colonial staff in Northern Nigeria was provided by the al majiri schools (Tsangaya).
The capture of Emir Aliyu of Kano and the death of Muhammadu Attahiru of Sokoto leds to the abolishment of the system by the colonial masters.
The pupils, and their Mallams, having no financial support, resorted to begging for survival. Animosity and antagonism grew, the mallams sent their students out to beg to make ends meet and also impose "kudin sati" weekly fees, reassuring them that " To beg was better than to steal" which I concur.
The students swan into the society with no bearing.
This was the genesis of the predicament of the Almajiri system today.
Ok, now enough of blaming the Brits, we have been “independent” for two generations, and this problem is now ours.
A UNICEF report from 2014 put the number of Almajiri in Nigeria at 9.5 million, or 72 per cent of the country’s 13.2 million out-of-school children, more of them in the North, this is disastrous!
The system as is currently practised ensures that loads of children never make it, alamjiri struggles to cater for themselves and to support his mallam (Teacher) too, at the point if doing that some are lost through crime and violence in the streets, while others are lost through disease and hunger.
Almajiri with no hope for the future swims into the act of Robbing, Terrorism, Raping e.t.c, which are social problems affecting the nation's economy and development
Last year around May, I went for an outdoor photoshot tour somewhere in my state Adamawa, after the tour I decided to pay a visit to a friend who was a medical practitioner, when I met him, he was looking furious and I couldn't help asking him the problem, the next thing he told me was that, they had just finished attending to a little boy of barely eleven years who was brought to the hospital by a ‘good Samaritan’ as a result of severe pain in the anal region. The minor who had difficulty sitting upright due to the pain was discovered on medical examination to have been raped through the anus. Obviously, some elements had taken advantage of a homeless Almajiri little boy.
With the voice of a model am calling on the attention of both parents and the government to take drastic measures in controlling the rapid growth of Almajiri in Nigeria.MORE PICTURES
